Tender description

As part of the 389 000 000 GBP Tyne and Wear Metro Asset Renewal Plan to modernise the system between 2010 and 2021, Nexus is tendering a Design and Construct Bridge Renewal package of works. The works are located on 1 bridge on the Nexus rail corridor between Longbenton and South Gosforth. The existing structure is to be demolished in its entirety and replaced with a new structure. Full closure of the Metro system in the vicinity of the bridge is required, (this includes closing the carriageway for long periods) during demolition and construction. The new structure is to be designed to incorporate possible future widening of the carriageway as presented by Newcastle City Council. Killingworth Road Bridge: The scope of works comprises as follows: — Detail design of Killingworth Road Bridge; — Mobilisation to site; — Closure of the Metro system in the vicinity of the works during July/August 2017; — Disconnect OLE equipment over the structure; — Remove tracks and ballast over the extents of the works; — Close carriageway; — Remove fill behind existing abutments (install temporary works if necessary to stabilise the excavated ground); — Demolish existing bridge deck; — Demolish existing abutments; — Construct abutment wall and install bridge bearings; — Install prefabricated deck units; — Open carriageway; — Install bottom ballast.
