137 - Appropriate Adult Service

Tender description

Wigan Council is currently exploring the market for the provision of an Appropriate Adult (AA) Service for juveniles and vulnerable adults in police custody. The Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) specifies that a person who is mentally disordered or otherwise mentally vulnerable or under 17 years of age* and in police detention requires an appropriate adult. The ?Appropriate Adult ?means in the case of a juvenile; 1.the parent, guardian or, if the juvenile is in local authority care, a person representing that organisation; 2.a social worker of a local authority; or 3.failing either of the above, another responsible adult aged 18 or over who is not a police officer or employed by the police. Vulnerable adult is defined as any person who may be suffering from a mental health problem or a learning disability.
