The Hinkley Housing Zone seeks to use the catalytic potential of the development of the UK’s first new nuclear power plant in 25 years to accelerate local housing delivery within the Sedgemoor and wider Somerset area. A £16n project to be taken forward over the next decade, Hinkley C will be Europe’s largest construction project at peak, employing over 6,000 on site and increasing local employment by 20%. For the local area, and particularly Bridgwater where the majority of associated development will be located, this potential poses both great opportunities for growth, with specific challenges to overcome on key issues like transport, housing and skills and training. As such, the government has designated the ‘Hinkley Housing Zone’ in order to concentrate efforts to increase housing supply within the impact area.
