Lewisham is in a unique position in that it incinerates most of its residual waste and as such doesn’t have the same drivers as many other local authorities in terms of having to divert biodegradable municipal waste from landfill. However Lewisham does have a clear vision with key values ensuring that waste is managed sustainably. The Council is committed to providing a high quality waste management service which is efficient, effective and convenient to its users and maximises the opportunity for recycling where at all possible whilst at the same time adhering to the principles of the waste hierarchy and encouraging waste prevention and reduction. The Council expects the Contractor to share the same commitment in its planning and execution of all work carried out in accordance with the Specification and the Conditions of Contract. Lewisham’s recycling target is to recycle / compost 21% of household waste by 2016/17 (subject to review). In order to achieve these targets the Council has implemented a number of schemes and initiatives over the past few years. Keywords: Recyclable
