A review of formal learning in the museum sector

Museum learning has a vital role to play in the cultural education of children and young people. Yet, in the current financial climate learning provision in museums is under pressure from funding reductions, reduced staffing and limited resources. Specific programmes and funding such as Arts Council England’s Museums and Schools programme (funded by DfE) is targeting provision in areas of low engagement, but there is a perception that learning provision in general is being reduced within museums. There is a need for a ‘state of the sector’ report into learning to identify gaps and best practice and support sustainability and development of learning in the museum sector. This is a research contract and the research aims to answer four key questions: A key thread that weaves through this research is the sustainability of the learning offer and the factors that influence this.
