Tender description

Dementia Cafe's Introduction The overarching aim of Wolverhampton City Council is to improve the lives of people living with dementia and their carers and enable them to live longer healthier lives within their own home and community. The Council aims to provide services developed specifically for people with dementia, carers and family members and continuously seek to improve the quality of services and to ensure that they are led and developed by those who use them. This specification outlines the commitment to quality and the service standards against which all dementia cafes are measured. The national strategic direction for dementia National Dementia Strategy: Living Well with Dementia 2009 and Wolverhampton's Joint Dementia Strategy 2015-17 advocates improved quality of life for people with dementia and their carers. Importantly people need to understand the signs and symptoms of dementia, should know where to for help. They also need to understand what they can expect during the course of the illness. The development of Dementia Cafes is recognised as an effective way of delivering peer support services, giving people with dementia an opportunity to share and learn from each other's experiences. This includes, for example, coping mechanisms in response to the possibility of social isolation; difficulties experienced and overcome in response to diagnosis and the impact of dementia on the day to day lives of people with dementia and their families. Peer support brings with it the emphasis that individuals with dementia and their carers are not alone in coping with the condition and encourages interaction and empathy with others who know, as far as is possible about the impact of dementia on daily. Currently there are six dementia cafes being delivered across Wolverhampton two of which are dedicated to South Asian community and people from the African and Caribbean communities.
