Project to survey moving image collections in Ireland

The IFI wishes to appoint a consultant to gather information relating to the existence, condition and content of moving image collections within the state in order to assess levels of acquisition, cataloguing, preservation practice, and digitisation and access policies across collections. In addition the findings of the survey it is intended that the project will result in high level database of existing collections of moving image materials held by individuals, organisations and institutions across the state. The database will build on existing lists of collections, gather new information, and centralise essential information on content and condition of collections. The database will be iterative as information will be added to it over time. This information will enable the Cinema Heritage Advisory Group to i) assess the existing situation ii) analyse and forecast future needs, iii) inform the creation of national policy and strategy for the preservation and accessibility of our moving image heritage. 1.3 Key Areas of Responsibility The successful consultant (s) will be required to • conduct a survey of moving image collections held in institutions, organisations and relevant bodies across the Republic of Ireland • develop a database to include information on their extent, formats, condition, content, rights and ownership, state of preservation, documentation and accessibility. Types of organisations to be surveyed will include heritage organisations such as museums, arts centres, educational organisations such as universities and research organisations, national cultural institutions and archives, government departments and other relevant organisations to be agreed with the project coordinator.
