Tender description

The aim of this project is to develop new strategies from modelling for control of nucleation, growth, agglomeration and breakage to deliver more reliable and predictable processes. The modelling aims to develop a systematic and efficient way of extracting information from experiments and using it for optimization, control and scale-up of industrial crystallization processes. Quantification and characterisation of the flow field will allow for a more complete understanding of the role of hydrodynamics in crystallisation. Secondary nucleation, agglomeration and breakage are influenced by local hydrodynamic conditions and the use of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) with modelling will enable understanding of the mechanisms through kinetic expressions based on the actual physics. The equipment is required to cary out two types of experiments involving single-particle events and hydrodynamics measurements. Results from these measurements will provide sufficient data to estimate parameters of the CFD model of the fluid flow in the stirred reactor and the secondary nucleation kinetics of the seeded crystallization processes.
