GPO Design & Fit-out of Exhibition Area

An Post is planning to construct an exhibition area within the footprint of the GPO. This new building will extend the current exhibition space from 150m2 to approximately 700- 800m2 as well as housing an auditorium.In developing this concept our intended objectives have been: •To provide the Public with greater access to the GPO site •To make optimum use of the space available •To have the new space operate in tandem and harmony with the existing retail post office operation – the busiest post office in the country •To ensure the provision of a profitable, diverse, world class visitor experience with capacity for ongoing evolution/innovation, in this part of Dublin’s North Inner City •To facilitate a real sense of, and opportunity for, public engagement •To ensure that we provide an experience of interest and value for everybody from schoolchildren to scholars, in line with our well established Educational Programme. •To establish a legacy which does not end on 31st December, 2016, but continues to evolves and remain relevant •To ensure that the exhibition reflects An Post’s brand values It is planned to open this unit in early 2016 to coincide with the Centenary of the 1916 rising. The space will present, illustrate and exhibit the events of 1916 as they occurred within the GPO, the impact on the people within the GPO and within the postal service in general. It is intended that this will present an immersive experience. There is much thought being put into how the current decade of centenaries can be presented across all media. There is an Oireachtas Committee charged with synchronising activity, the Commemorations Committee, supported by a committee of Academics.
