Monitoring Assistance for the Water Framework Directive

The EPA carries out the biological monitoring for all freshwater waterbodies i.e. rivers and lakes on the WFD Monitoring Programme. Biological monitoring which requires a boat is undertaken on lakes in July and August when macrophyte surveys are undertaken. Occasionally, a boat is required where it provides access to a suitable site for the sampling of invertebrates in April. River sampling commences in June and can continue on until October depending on weather conditions. For health and safety reasons, 2 person teams are required for the sampling of lakes when a boat is required. It is to be expected that such fieldwork will involve overnight stays. Therefore, an assistant is required on occasion to accompany EPA personnel and to input field data subsequently. The EPA is seeking field assistance in the area of biological monitoring of lakes and other field duties as may be required in support of the Water Framework Directive and input the data collected into the data management system.
