Drogheda Medieval Town Walls at Mount Saint Oliver

Tender description

The project consists of the repair and stabilisation of a section of the medieval town wall. This section of wall forms part of the medieval town wall circuit on the south side of the river Boyne and is located directly west of Millmount in an area known as Mount Saint Oliver. The whole town of Drogheda is listed as a recorded monument and the town walls circuit is considered to be a National Monument.It is a Protected Structure No. DB158 (Millmount)The adjacent Millmount is an Architectural Conservation Area No. 9All parts of the wall are included in the zone of archaeological potential for the medieval town (LH024:041).The wall runs from Millmount down a steep embankment into a yard. The overall length is 19m, the height varies from 2.8m – 4.8m along its length. The overall thickness of the wall is 800mm.The works include- The removal of vegetation- Excavation of 3no. trial holes to establish ground conditions- Underpinning of a 5m section of wall- Build a retaining wall- Repoint in lime mortar-Gravity grout wall core- Rebuild part of the wall top- The requirement for temporary works to gain access to the unstable section of wall
