Production of 5km seeded seaweed collector string/rope

Tender description

This tender is for the provision of 5kms of seeded seaweed collector string/rope. The duration of the proposed work is October to December 2011. The methods for the hatchery work are already established and documented. The publications are available from BIM (Ref: BIM Aquaculture Explained No 26. ‘Cultivating Laminaria digitata’ (2011) and BIM Aquaculture Explained No 21. ‘Cultivation of brown seaweed Alaria esculenta’ (2006). This proposed contract is an extension of the project, PBA/SW/07/001(01), Development and demonstration of viable hatchery and ongrowing methodologies for seaweed species with identified commercial potential’. The project was carried out under the Sea Change Strategy with the support of the Marine Institute and the Marine Research Sub-programme of the National Development Plan 2007-2013. Laminaria digitata was included in the list of identified species. In addition, BIM conducted trials on Alaria esculenta previously.
