Under Article 11 of the HD, Ireland is required to undertake surveillance of the conservation status of the five lake types. In line with Article 17 of the HD (see Assessment and Reporting Guidelines ), Ireland must report to the European Commission on the conservation status of its Annexed habitats and species every six years, with the next report due in 2013. In addition, Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) designated for the five lake habitats form part of the WFD Register of Protected Areas (Article 6 and Annex IV) and the WFD objectives include achieving compliance with the relevant water quality or quantity standards for those SAC lakes. Under S.I. 272 of 2009, NPWS must report the conservation status of SAC lakes to the EPA for classification of lake status under the WFD.
