A19 Silverlink Widening

Tender description

A19/A1058 Silverlink Interchange is situated on the eastern side of the City of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, just to the north of the River Tyne, located between Wallsend and North Shields. The interchange is a five-arm traffic signal controlled roundabout formed where the A19 and A1058 routes intersect. The A19 intersects this roundabout and runs north-south in a cutting, the A1058 Coast Road is a grade separated local authority dual carriageway running east-west over the A19 roundabout. The Silverlink is a local highway authority road leading to the Tyneside (Silverlink) Retail Park/Cobalt Business Park developments to the north east side of the interchange and intersects the A19 roundabout at-grade. Under the scheme, the circulatory carriageway will be widened from the existing three lane to a four lane design. The A19 approaches will be widened from the current two lanes to four lanes and the local highway authority A1058 Coast Road eastbound off-slip will be widened from the existing two lanes to three lanes. To facilitate the widening works within existing highway land, a retaining wall will be constructed on the A19 southbound approach and re-grading of the existing cutting will be undertaken on the A1058 Coast Road eastbound off-slip. Pedestrians from all corners of the interchange will be provided with a new at-grade segregated route within the interchange island. It is anticipated that the majority of the work will be undertaken via night time lane closures.
