Tender description

Location The scheme is approximately 1.4km in length located within the Area 14 MAC, on a lit section of the A1(T) dual carriageway to the North of Washington services, at Eighton Lodge grade separated interchange. The two way AADT for this section of the A1(T) is approximately 100,000 with 8% HCVs. The area to be treated is the central reserve and verges from the North Dene footbridge to the existing emergency crossover located to the north west of Eighton Lodge interchange. Details of Work The existing central reserve vehicle restraint system (VRS) is primarily open box beam with sections of tensioned corrugated beam installed approximately 20 years ago. The maintenance history of the VRS system has been limited to replacement sections in part where due to accident damage. Investigative tests have shown large sections of the VRS are affected by corrosion of the posts with effect that its working life has now expired. The Works include for the central reserve VRS system to be removed and replaced with new. Investigative testing has shown that selected central reserve road lighting column foundations are failing due to ground conditions. The Works include for all central reserve road lighting columns to be removed and replaced with either steel or passively safe columns within the nearside verges of both carriageways. Investigative testing has shown that part of the existing central reserve highway drainage system carrier pipes are fractured / blocked. The Works include for the section of failed drainage system to be replaced with new linear kerb drain. Existing road traffic signs defective or affected by the Works are to be replaced. Traffic Management All works shall be undertaken at nigh time between 22:00 - 06:00 and returned to two way narrow lane working during the daytime under a reduced speed limit for the duration of the Works.
