A66 Cross Lanes to Lowfields & A66 Bowes Interchange Carriageway Renewal

Location The scheme is located on the A66 between the Bowes Interchange and the B6277 junction at Cross Lanes. In this area the A66 is unlit and is a combination of dual and single carriageway. The scheme is in a rural environment. The two way AADT for this section of the A66 is approximately 15,000 with 27% HCVs. Details of Work The works involve the following: The construction of localised carriageway widening to the west of the Clint Farm over bridge, the construction of a central reserve crossover at the eastern end of the dual carriageway section and adjustments to the central reserve road restraint system under the bridge in order to facilitate the utilisation of a contra flow system of traffic management on the western dual carriageway section albeit with reduced lane widths. The establishment of a contra flow system of traffic management on the eastern section of dual carriageway. A combination of 65mm, 180mm and 300mm inlay treatments will be implemented as appropriate on the east and west bound carriageways. The works will be carried out either at night between 20:00 and 06:00 or by the use of 24 hour / day contra flow traffic management working in order to minimise network occupancy. Traffic Management Combinations of contra flow traffic management, lane closures and lane closures with traffic signal control will be utilised. A 24 hour / day contra flow system of traffic management will be utilised for the eastern section of the works. The contra flow will be implemented by using an existing crossover at the eastern end of the works whilst the contra flow will be developed at the western end where the carriageway changes from single to dual carriageway. The length of the contra flow will be approximately 3.75km excluding approach traffic management.
