DRD Underwater Bridge Inspection Programme 2008-10

DRD Roads Service carry out structural inspections to all their bridges in the province. Each Bridge is inspected above the water line by Engineers within the Roads Service Agency however a facility does not exist in-house for inspections of the structures below the water line. The Department wishes to make a single appointment of an Integrated Project Team to conduct the underwater inspections and report their findings. The underwater investigation report will either confirm the structural integrity of bridge below the water line or identify deficiencies in the structure that Roads Service will need to address with remedial work in a maintenance repair programme. DRD Roads Service will be commissioning underwater structural assessments of 93 bridges throughout their four divisions. These vary in size from single arched structures bridging rivers of low flow in rural settings to multi arched structures in major towns and cities. The commission will extend over a two year period and will include full underwater inspections – complete with detailed reports - of the structures and adjacent river beds.
