20/KL Learning Resources Centre Book Security System

Tender description

Opening in September 2006, the Learning Resources Centre (LRC) at the University of Sheffield will provide a state of the art study and learning facility for the University’s 23 000 students. The building will contain some 1000 study spaces and around 100 000 heavily used textbooks on reference and short term loan. Book loan and return will be fully automated, with students approaching the helpdesk only to resolve loan queries.<br /><br />The University of Sheffield seeks to procure a system to support the efficient and effective circulation and security of the books in the LRC. The system should meet the following criteria:<br /><br />• Be fully compatible with the Library’s Talis Library Management System<br />• Be fully compatible with the Library’s 3M security system in use in the Library’s 9 sites, as books and other materials will be transferred between sites<br />• Be fully compatible with the University’s identity card (Ucard) system. The Ucard currently contains an identification number as a barcode and coded onto a magnetic strip.<br />• Offer enhanced management facilities for the stock, for example, locating out of sequence material, collecting statistics<br />• Offer straightforward issue and return for users<br />• Ability to return books securely outside the LRC security perimeter.<br /><br />The closing date for expressions of interest is 3rd November 2004 by 17.00pm<br /><br />There is a non refundable application cost of 100.00 GBP for the issue of tender documents. This will apply to companies who successfully reach the invitation to tender stage. Cheques will be made payable to the University of Sheffield.
